Design for All: from idea to practice

DfA is on the agenda of research for more than 10 years. After several national policy actions around the globe, recently on international policy level, in the “UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”, reference has been given to Universal Design, a concept closely related to DfA. However, the level of take up of DfA in the design processes of industries and services stays behind the expectations. The idea has obviously been welcomed as a good one, but the implementation shows slow progress.

This session calls for contributions which discuss the current development, the threats and challenges towards a successful implementation of DfA. “What are the key elements, what are the actions needed, which could be the next steps” are the kind of questions for exchange between the presenters and the participants. It is expected to provide input for a DfA roadmap from this session.

This session will be organised in the frame of the D4All@eInclusion Logoproject. Memebers of the consortium support the organisation of the STS and will contribute to the programme:

  • Introduction by STS chair: Managing Design for All,
Ch. Bühler, Forschungsinstitut Technologie und Behinderung der Evangelischen Stiftung Volmarstein, Lehrstuhl für Rehabilitationstechnologie, Technische Universität Dortmund, D
  • The impact of technological development on eAccessibility
  • Knowledge and skills required for DfA in industrial practice
  • The basis of success: Quality Information
  • DfA Education and training as a key element for implementation of DfA,
  • Support of EDeAN to DfA development (European Design for all eAccessibility Network
