11th International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs

Pre-Conference July 7-8, 2008

Digital libraries helping people with print disabilities

Digital techniques may support strategies for promoting an equal right to read for all citizens, including people with print disabilities. Electronic books can be customised according to the needs of different readers. This concerns the style of presentation, the lay-out and the reading functionality, as well. Transformations or adaptations can be operated  on-demand from a server. The delivery over the Internet can be secured as to respect the intellectual property associated with the contents.
Thus the Internet creates conditions where readers with special needs should be able to borrow books from accessible digital libraries.
This Special Thematic Session will discuss how the different players involved in the publishing chain, from the authors to organisation producing adapted versions of books, can cooperate  to provide accessible contents supported by different  platforms.
The presentations should offer an opportunity to better understand the concepts and techniques underlying the delivery of accessible contents, and/or to discuss concrete cases.
This Special Thematic should encourage the harmonisation of good practices.
