Collaboration among blind and sighted people has become possible through screenreaders. This assistive technology turns a graphical user interface into a multimodal system supporting speech and braille output. Alternatively self‐voicing applications such as book readers are widely adopted. Designing haptic interaction is considered far more difficult and challenging due to the lack of experience with different haptic technologies and their non‐verbal nature.
The topic of this STS will allow authors to address new developments when designing haptic interaction such as
This STS continues the successful discussion of the STSs “Blind and Visually Impaired People: Human‐Computer Interaction and Access to Graphics” at ICCHP 2008 and “Tactile Interaction” at HCI International 2009. Several authors have stressed already then the need for understanding more about the design of new screen readers, adaptation of existing screen readers, or new insights into the design of haptic interaction.
The STS will present several results of the Hyperbraille project which involves a considerable number of partners developing novel hardware and software. Lessons learned from designing with and evaluation by blind people will provide some insight into this emerging domain of Human‐Computer Interaction.
This STS is supported by Hyperbraille.de.
