People with severe motor disabilities, such as myopathy, cerebral palsy and musculoskeletal disorders, have difficulties in using physical keyboards. Generally, they are obliged to use virtual on-screen keyboards, also called soft keyboards. Many solutions have been tested since the early 80s. Their main objective has been to provide a means for communication, but additional goals could exist: (1) to reduce the number of interactions either with ambiguous keyboards [1] or prediction systems [2]; and (2) to make the access to a desired entry easier through a reorganization of the keyboard’s layout, either static or dynamic [3].
This Special Thematic Session (STS) will discuss recent experience and contributions on approaches, methods, models, techniques and experimental work for enhancing text entry accessibility for motor disabled people. This Special Thematic Session will consider all aspects of research on text entry, including (but not limited to):
