ICCHP 2010

12th International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs

Pre-Conference July 12-13, 2010

Open Source - Nevertheless Barriers

The idea of Open Source is the way to an equal and free access for everybody into the electronic information and communication world. Linux is actually the most common operating system offering this open access. Consequently more and more educational institutions, public sector and companies leave Windows and change to Linux.
Nevertheless there are still a lot of inaccessible programmes for people with disabilities.
Projects like SUE, ORCA, GOK, dasher, kmouth and kmag intend to improve accessibility and usability.
SUE (Screenreader & Usability Extensions) – funded by the German Federal Ministry of Labour and social Affairs (from 01/2007 - 06/2010) - intends to develop a screenreader for the graphical interface GNOME, based on ORCA and LSR. It supports Braille, speech and magnification. A training programme for qualifying teachers and trainers and for teaching visually impaired users is included.

The STS invites people working in the field of Accessibility and Usability, Open Source and TTS as well as those interested in improving the open access for people with disabilities.
