Empowerment of People with Cognitive Disabilities Using Digital Technologies

Digital technologies as part of assistive technologies are widely accepted as instrument for people with disabilities supporting their ADL tasks (Activities of Daily Living) at home and at work. Digital technologies are already successfully used by many people with disabilities and disability groups on their own. This is very accepted by people with disabilities and is very much supported by R&D and politics.

However, two areas still receive little consideration or are even neglected from the institutional perspective: the use of modern media for support by people with intellectual restrictions or disability and the use of digital technologies to enhance the independence and autonomy of this group of people with disabilities. If this people want to join in based on their interest in an inclusive manner they need access to the options and technical features of mainstream media, social networks and other digital technologies.

In this STS, different aspects and approaches on how digital technologies can be developed, organized and supported according to the needs of people with disabilities, will be considered and discussed. The topics comprise the situation of public Internet access points, digital tool support, online peer support, social networks, maker space activities etc.

Current research projects and practical approaches will be presented and critically discussed.

Contributions to the STS have to be submitted using the standard submission procedures of ICCHP.
